I had no expectations going into this book. I did know that I was looking for something not so heavy, but I also didn't want complete fluff. I can honestly say that I got exactly what I was looking for.

This book is a little romantic, a little chuckle-worthy, and a lot mystery. I enjoyed the ever growing relationships in this book, along with the mystery of what exactly was going on in the book. There was a perfect mix of great characters, personal conflict, whodunit, and small town charm to keep me turning the pages from the start.

I will admit, at first I was worried that the over the top scenarios Summer found herself in where going to be it for the book. And that kind of scared me. I didn't want that. Lucky for me, the author delivered in all other areas that mattered. The perfect combination of cliche small town, actual small town, and a great mystery made this book a winner for me. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to read this book prior to its release. As always, I truly enjoyed the start of this new series. Summer Butler has no choice but to be on a reality show in her hometown surrounded by family that she thinks doesn't want her and the only ex she ever loved. To top it off, nothing's harder than trying to be a serious actress when the producer is giving you terrible cases and forcing the show to look ridiculous. Only Summer recognizes that there is a real case that she can actually help solve and with a little help from her cousin, Dixie, and a friendly cameraman, Bill, she finds herself truly investigating a deadly case.

If you're a fan of mystery, a little romance, and shows like UnReal, this is definitely the book for you! You won't help but love Summer and Dixie! And there are moments with Luke, the ex, where you want to smack him but I still like him too. I can't wait for the next book!
Denise Grover Swanks Deadly Summer book was just as fantastic as I thought it would be. It took me a few chapters to “feel the love for this book”, but when it hit, I couldn’t put it down. Summer is a washed up, has been tv star forced to do a reality show to save her family’s farm. It is a detective reality show with a real missing person case to solve. Of course, this leads to way more than just a missing person case, insert Rose and Magnolia type of shenanigans. Twists and turns abound. Summers tag line from her former tv show was “gotcha” I could envision Denise Grover Swank looking at her readers and saying ‘gotcha” at the plot twist! I have to admit I may have caught myself saying “gotcha” to my family and friends a few times after reading this book. I Just explain to them it's in a book that they WILL be reading soon and you should to!
Denise Grover Swank is one of my favorite writers so I had high expectations for this book. I'm pleased to say this was another great one. I have to be honest though, I did not love the main character in the beginning. She seemed spoiled, entitled and shallow but as the character evolved I learned there was more to her than I had originally thought. She was loyal, inquisitive and humble. As in other books by this author, I feel there are SO many great side characters that can be explored in further novels and I can't wait to read about them! I decided to read "Deadly Summer" twice before leaving a review and it was no hardship. I love a novel I can get lost in and Denise Grover Swank never fails to deliver.
I am always a bit hesitant to jump into a new book series with gusto, I mean I have my favorites (many of which have been written by this author), but I always wonder if I will really like the series as much as many of the others. Well let me tell you, this is already one of my favorite new series!!
I was lucky enough to get an ARC copy prior to the book's release and I could.not.put.it.down. Summer is a very likable character, she was a Hollywood child star who was never able to break into grown-up stardom, but left a lasting impression that still has people asking her for her famous line from her role as a young actress. She's in a world of financial troubles since her mother ran off with much of her earnings years earlier and she hasn't been able to find steady work since, thus her desperate decision to star in a reality TV show in her hometown in Alabama.
She's a humble woman and willing (albeit reluctantly) to face those people in her past that she feels she let down. While the reality show is a farce, one of her cases to find a missing person catches her interest and she decides to look into it on her own along with her new investigations sidekick, Dixie (aka her cousin). That decision kicks the book into high gear, putting Summer in awkward and dangerous situations the closer she gets to the real truth behind this case. There's suspense, romance, and lots of laughs with a whole host of new characters who are definitely going to make this another superb series. There are many things that I look forward to see play out through the series including her relationship with Luke, Granny finding out about the balloon payment on the farm, the "must happen" showdown with her mother, and lots of great cases that are sure to keep us all entertained. Can't wait for the next Darling Investigations installment!
Denise Grover Swank knows how to write a good mystery! Deadly Summer is a great addition to her repertoire. Summer Butler, the titular character, is the strong kind that Denise writes best. Dysfunctional family? Check. Dead bodies? Check. A mystery that's a fun who-dun-it? Check. A lead character with a complicated past? Check. Comedy, even when you're not expecting it? Check. A dash of romance on the side? Check. A heroine with a life so messy that you're glad you're not her? Check!

Deadly Summer is a fun, fast paced read. I highly recommend it for fans of Denise Grover Swank, mysteries, and books of all kinds. ****Five solid stars!****
