Rhis is sixteen, romantic, a princess of the tiny kingdom of Nym.
Nothing ever happens in Nym, until she receives an invitation to a celebration for Prince Lios of Vesarja, the largest kingdom around.
Lios is as handsome as Rhis hoped, and she falls instantly in love, just like in her favorite songs. But life isn't like the songs--none of her friends are happy, and then there is the Perfect Princess, Iardith, who keeps occupying Lios's time.
Rhis does her best to fix things for her friends, as she pursues her romantic ideal . . . and then the Perfect Princess is abducted.
Of course Rhis must go to the rescue . . . the princes right behind.
This rollicking romantic fantasy takes place in the same world as the Wren Books, and Lhind the Thief.

Okay, so I admit this wasn't much of a challenge for me to read, since this is the kind of stuff I lap up with a spoon. I mean c'mon, prince and princesses, castles...magic diamonds. Now, wait! Don't run, this isn't a cheesy version of Princess Diaries 2 (although, if you must know I liked that fluff film.) This is an adventurous take on some prince and princess clichés.Up until now I had only read Sherwood Smith's Crown & Court Duel, but that was enough to cement her into my list of favorite authors. What I love about her, is that although I'm indulged with all my favorite elements in fiction, I'm still confronted with practical girls, who although wish for romance, know the duties they must face to protect things in life that are bigger than themselves.
Enter Rhis, princess of the small kingdom of Nym known for its mountains and gems. It's such a small kingdom they don't hold court or do that many social activities. She loves to spend her time in her tower playing her tiranthe and writing ballads. She feels no pressure to apply herself in her studies as she is not the heir, and will not grow up to be a royal mage like her sister. Before applying herself she wants to undergo an adventure and a bit of romance. Well lucky for her Queen Briath from a neighboring kingdom has invited all the eligible princesses to her son Lios coming of age party. So Rhis gets a chance to practice courtly behavior as well as be an ambassador for her own kingdom.
Income all the princesses who have hopes of snagging the prince and a series of parties, picnics, dances and all sorts of fun. Rhis finds herself making friends with such interesting characters. There is Taniva of the High Plains whose idea of fun is fighting with her neighboring enemy Jarvas of Damatras. Then there is Shera from Gensam who can't help but flirt with every boy she sees. Yuzhyu of the Isle of Ndai who is sort of left out of everything despite being the princes cousin, and the mysterious and charming Dandiar the princes personal scribe. The characters are really fleshed out, and the ones we end up hating we find out the reason they became that way.
But when Iardith the most beautiful princess (albeit also the most ill-mannered princess), who the girls can't help but dislike ends up being abducted the girls set out to bring her back. This is definitely a girl power sort of book, because although the girls all want the prince they discover more important things like friendship and self worth. That no one can really be overlooked, because everyone has value. And that falling in love isn't just about looks, but heart and mind. I know the cover is sort of cheesy, but don't let that get in the way. Sherwood Smith makes awesome characters who are practical when necessary but always fun.

A Posse of Princesses eBook Sherwood Smith Reviews
I love fantasy and now have a daughter who loves it too. The good news/bad news is that, while she's only in first grade she's reading at a fifth grade or above level. While I've been able to find some fantasy books at her reading level that don't have implied, or semi explicit sex, it's hard! Even Tamora Pierce, one of my fav authors, won't work for her. Don't get me wrong, I don't think sex (implied or semi explicit) is inappropriate to put in books for middle school and above, however I do think my daughter, at six, is too young to read it.
This book, however, is a wonderfully fun, chaste, book. She can't decide which of the princesses is her favorite and likes them all. And it shows her that, just like people, princesses come in all types, shapes and sizes (and temperaments!) Although I figured out the plot twist pretty early on, the book still worked and the last third, wherein the 'Posse' is formed makes up for the plot device. I didn't like how the ending was handled when I first read it, but it's grown on me.
Recommended (for you and your precocious daughter if you have one!)
Rhis of Nym is invited to join other royals and nobles at an extended party hosted by the dashing Prince Lios. Though some seek political conquest by marriage, Rhis and many others just hope for a fun time with new friends. Meeting such wonderful people as her sister-in-law, the dreamy flirt Shera, the Prince's cousin Yuzyhou (who struggles with the language), the daring horsewoman-Princess Taniva, and the ever-present, ever friendly Prince's scribe Dandiar, Rhis is having a wonderful time. But when one of the princes kidnaps a princess, Rhis rallies her friends to stop before things spiral out of control! Will Rhis save them all? Will she end up with the true prince of her heart? A delightful read when you're hoping for something fun!
I will start by saying that I enjoyed this book very much, as the style appeals to me and I liked the characters. However, I will warn that this book is more of a casual walk than a roller coaster. The book progresses rather slowly, not delving into the described plot (the kidnapped princess) until more than halfway through the book. This is not to say that the book has no action. Rather than fast paced action scenes, we are given a book about people and interactions.
The love story is very sweet, based more on friendship and respect than on instant attraction. Much like Crown/ Court Duel, the characters connect over intellectual ideas and mutual admiration. I admire this kind of romance, as I believe that it is harder to build a believable friendship and love than to write about instant attraction and passion.
Some reviews that I read had issues with the messages of this book. One reviewer found the book to be preachy, another found it to be too loose. I will say that I like the message, that everyone has something special to offer. That those who embrace friendship are the strongest and most admired people. That station in life does not make you a better or worse person. That falseness is never appreciated. As for the looseness, shown primarily by a flirty girl in the book, I don't think it is harmful to show her personality in a book about acceptance. She was flirty, but she was also shown to be a dedicated friend, a true romantic, and a passionate songwriter.
Sorry this is so long, but to sum it up this was a great read, especially for fans of Sherwood Smith's writing style. Easy and enjoyable read with charming characters.
