This book is a very short story. However given the authors background I think this is an appropriate book. Is very different from the giants series. Test SYLVAIN NEUVEL 9781250312839 Books Reviews
Rarely do I start a book and am IMMEDIATELY engaged; totally connected with a character I have NOTHING in common with. I had to read it (audible edition through my library and will buy this one for friends and family
Completely unlike Sleeping Giants...not at all what I was expecting...I am very glad I read it, but I cannot say that I ENJOYED it, it was very intense and really has me thinking about the future of humanity, because I can, unfortunately, TOTALLY see us (as a species) doing this...
"I am on my knees. I have been here before. I have been thrown to the ground and I have felt the tip of their guns on the back of my neck. I have been through this and I have survived. We will survive. All of us."
In The Test, we follow Idir Jalil, an Iranian immigrant who’s looking to pass the British citizenship test so he and his family can stay in the UK. Despite the pressure he’s under — because, as he quickly lets us know through his own memories and back story, there’s so much at stake for the Jalil family — Idir’s in a great mood. He’s studied hard, he’s confident without being arrogant, and those first few questions breeze by for him.
Suddenly, a massive wrench is thrown into the works and Idir finds himself being pulled into a warped terrorist scene, where he’s forced to make decisions so much harder than any question the test could have asked him. There’s so much going on in this little story, and I truly can’t say more, because it’s so short and quick-paced that any further details would be spoilers.
Instead, I’ll just say that this is one of the greatest novellas I have ever read. It was a tremendously well-fleshed story despite its brevity, Idir is one of the most likable protagonists I’ve ever read in my life, and the social commentary here on racism, xenophobia, sexism, and more? I was blown away. There are moments in this novella that shook me to my core, and the ending? Wow, what a brilliant way to close it up.
This was my first time reading Sylvain Neuvel’s work, but I can assure you that it won’t be my last.
Thanks to Tor.com and the author for an advanced reading copy of The Test in exchange for an honest review. Receiving this ARC in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions on the novella.
This was my first foray into Neuvel’s writing and certainly won’t be my last. I have heard great things about his Themis Files trilogy and The Test gives me an anticipation boost to start the series.
The Test begins begins with a room full of test takers, including our protagonist, Idir, and a multiple choice, 25-question exam to determine the potentiality of citizenship in the UK. With a few questions knocked out of the park, Idir believes he will come through this with flying colors.
But when variables change and the test comes down to life or death, multiple choice doesn’t always hand you the answer you expect, or want.
I have to say, this novella blew my mind through the first 20 or so pages. I feel like I was dropped into an episode of Black Mirror where I am going down one path and BOOM, 180° turn. WTF??? To really explain this feeling would absolutely spoil the read for you so you’ll just have to find out what mean for yourself.
One thing Neuvel has going for him his character development. It has been a while since I have been so emotionally invested in a character, but Idir takes the freaking cake. I laughed. I cried. I felt triumph to only have it absolutely crushed into dust. But when it came down to the hard decisions, I had his back.
The Test is a very unsettling read, and a bit of a mindf^$k if I’m being honest. It’ll take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride, one with an underlying darkness that stays with you and will leave you with less answers than you began with. But I have to say, I highly recommend it. Short, engaging, and powerful.
A strong work. There's a really Black Mirror-y vibe as another reviewer suggested. My only complaint is that the roughly 100 page length felt short coming directly from reading his Themis Files trilogy. I wanted more from the story.
Great story, neat plot, well written. You expect certain parts and then the third act surprised me. I just wish it was longer.
Wow! That was a mind boggling twisty psychological story by one of my favorite authors. This was very reminiscent of something out of Black Mirror and would make a great episode.
This book is a very short story. However given the authors background I think this is an appropriate book. Is very different from the giants series. But I do recommend it and enjoyed it
